Krewedo Craft teaches kids to sew down by the bayou

On Friday June 20, KrewedoCraft paraded down the bayou to Destrehan to assist with St. Charles Library System's Teen Summer programs. The challenge was to help students learn to recycle old clothing into new fashions.

The teens worked with old tshirts and transformed them into new designs using scissors and sewing machines.
In just two hours and a lot of nailbiting later, each teen went home with their own creation.
Way to go green Destrehan! KrewedoCraft loves ya!

GoodChildren Easter parade was a blast

We had such a great time at the Easter Parade. First off, the handmade throws were amazing and a big hit with the crowd.Phil and Teena Confetti made handmade Moai,fabric easter eggs and necklaces. Maria had keychains, magnets and lightswitch covers.

The costumes were out of control. Do you see these ladies with the Easter Basket hats? Cant believe the wind didnt blow them away.

There were tons of bunnies. Some happy. Some tired. A few were just too something.

So many handmade wonderful things went out like candy, baby dolls, and eggs full of craft goodness.

The crowd and parade go-er favorite, had to be the opposite machine, which was created by Helen Hill, the filmmaker who was killed here last year. In the opposite machine you put in a card with your troubles, and then you exchange your troubles for something else.

Ask what you can do for New Orleans!

Do you feel ever so slightly guilty that people from all over the country are pouring into New Orleans this month to help us out?

Do you long for volunteer opportunities in New Orleans so you can tell your grandchildren how you helped rebuild New Orleans ?

Do you want to spend the last day of Lent atoning for your sins?

Obviously living here post-K is rebuilding and atonement enough, and sometimes about all we can handle. But if you are interested in volunteering, some neighbors are organizing a clean-up day in the 7th Ward for Saturday, March 22. We are meeting at 8 AM at 2200 Lapeyrouse, which is the home and office of The Neighborhood Story Project. From there we will fan out in all directions to pick up trash, clean storm drains, pull ads off telephone poles and give the area bounded by N. Claiborne and N. Broad, Esplanade and St. Bernard a good spring cleaning.

If you can donate a box of garbage bags and bring your own rake and gloves that would be great. If you have a weed eater and can bring that along too that would be truly amazing since we have a plethora of overgrown weeds in vacant lots and in front of empty houses.

Also, if you would like help organizing a clean-up in your area, helping us out would be a great way to get started on your own neighborhood clean-up day.

The Goodchildren Carnival Club is pleased to announce its Easter Parade, taking place on Sunday, March 23 at 3 p.m. The theme is "Resurrection". The name of the club is taken from the old name for St. Claude, which was Goodchildren (Bons Enfants).

The parade route is St. Claude Avenue, from Poland Avenue to Elysian Fields. Leading the parade musically will be the pride of the neighborhood, the Frederick Douglass High School Marching Band.

Parading groups include the Goodchildren, the Krewe do Craft, Defend New Orleans, the Krewe of Brid, the Krewe of Eris, The Royals, Kajun's Pub, Wayne's World, Bunny Hoppers, the Guardian Angels, NOLA Rising, the Bywater Neighborhood Association, St. Claude Avenue Main Street, the Green Project, the Stroller Brigade, the Bicycle Beauty Pageant, the Farmers Market. The lineup ends with the fabulous Dukes of Debris, who will clean up as we go and leave the world a better place.

Look for some super-throws from the Black Ghost (and if we're lucky, a personal appearance), the Goodchildren (whose signature throw is decorated dolls), swanky men's ties from Wayne's World, handmade throws from the Krewe do Kraft, and rubber duckies from the Stroller Brigade.

Following the parade are a variety of activities along St. Claude, with something for everyone. The HomeSpace Gallery will play host to an exhibit of brilliant photos by the Kid Camera Project - St. Roch, who may also serve as parade photographers.

There will be a pub/gallery crawl including the HiHo Lounge, Kajun's Pub, Cowpokes, Markey's Bar, the Saturn Bar, L'Art Noir Gallery, and the St. Roch Tavern, which will be hosting a crawfish boil. Several of these venues will have early and late shows, so there will be plenty to do whenever you come out.

Guitar Lightnin' Lee will perform a late show, beginning around 11. Admission is free for members, or $5 for non-members.

It's been a really busy month since Mardi Gras and the Krewe has been busy getting ready for the parade of GoodChildren on Easter sunday, which heads west on St. Claude from Poland to Elysian Fields.Our throws will be handmade eggs of all varieties,moas from Easter Island,magnets,the pincushons,golden spools and our long awaited KREWE DO CRAFT ZINE.Only a limited number available.

Our Krewe do Craft had a really incredible time at the Box of Wine Parade yesterday. After our Endymion permit fell through, we worried that we would would be a Krewe without a parade. It turned out to be so perfect that we were invited to march with Box of Wine.

We met at 3pm before the Bacchus route to get lined (&liquored) up for parading. We were placed behind the Black Bear Combo (from Chicago) which played great polka punk street music the whole time.
After about an hour of this getting ready we hit St Charles Avenue dancing and throwing stuff.There were so many people out! We seemed to run out of stuff at about Jackson Avenue. Just as dusk was hitting, we got to Clio Street and the street party began. A great time was had by all and we're sorry that all of our Krewe couldnt make it. Hopefully next year we'll have a bigger and group and get that float we've been planning on. Peace, beignets & Happy Mardi Gras!

What a weekend- after our 3 page spread in the Times Picayune, and weeks of making stuff, hatching plans, biting nails, glue gun-ing and spray of painting. It's time yall.

We're meeting up at 2:30pm at the Turning Point Lounge where Washington meets Baronne.Not much time left between chilling the wine and getting last minute stuff together. Hoppe all of yall can join us. Also a big Thanks thanks thanks to Doug McCash for taking pics and putting them in the paper. It does the heart good.

WE'VE BECOME A KREWE WITHOUT A ROUTE. Late last week our sponsors were unable to get a parade permit so they've bowed out of the parade. So we've got choices. We can be a renegade Krewe and just show up somewhere. We can blend in with other marchers in anyone of a number of parades about to happen and there is always the St. Ann Parade for fun and craft hijinx.

Let's look at the bright side: our route is automatically shorter, we dont have to make a million throws and we dont have to come up with a lot of money for a band.

Comment and weigh in on our options and we'll post a new poll about parading on Wednesday.

We had a great meeting last night at The Neutral Ground Coffeehouse.Thanks everybody for attending. Our name was established as Krewe "do" Craft and our costumes will be "tools" as related to our respective art fields.
We are meeting uptown at the home of YabettaSupadont (aka Maria)next Wednesday January 23 for a krewe wide make in of throws, krewe banners et al, so contact me for details. Also the Times Picayune is on the lookout for artistic handmade throws to feature in their paper so get cracking on it right away.......
